GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Currently, two different graduation rules are in effect for students in Georgia Schools. For students who started ninth grade during the 2008-2009 school year a new graduation rule is in effect.  Students who started high school anytime before the 2008-2009 SY are under the old graduation rule.

Requirements for 9th Grade Students Who Entered HS During 2008-2009 SY

 Main Components of the New Diploma Requirements:

  • Elimination of a tiered diploma option
  • Common set of diploma requirements
  • All graduates are prepared for either college entry courses with no remediation or entry into the workplace

Requirements For Students Who Started 9th Grade For the First Time in 2011-2012

 Main Components of  Diploma Requirements:

  • Must Pass GHSGT in Writing to be eligible for a diploma.
  • Are required to pass courses associated with EOCT, with the EOCT contributing 20% to course grade
  • Requires 4 years of English, Math, Science & 3 years of SS plus 1 unit Health/Per Fitness and a total of 7 units of electives (3 units in a For Lang, Fine Art or CTAE courses)
 

Requirements for Promotion to
Next Grade Level

 In December, 2004, the Cherokee County Board of Education amended the promotion/ retention policy. The new policy went into effect at end of the 2004-2005 school year.

 The requirements for promotion to the next grade level are as follows:

(Old Graduation Rule) To be promoted to the:

·          10th grade - 5 units (must include 1 unit English and 1 unit math)

·          11th grade - 10 units (must include 2 units English and 2 units math)

·          12th grade - 16 units (must include 3 units English, 2 units math, 1 unit science and 1 unit social studies)

  (New Graduation Rule) To be promoted to the:

·          10th grade - 5 units (must include 1 unit English, 1 unit math and 1 unit in Science)

·          11th grade - 11 units (must include 2 units English, 2 units math and 1 unit in Science)

·          12th grade - 17 units (must include 3 units English, 3 units math, 2 units science and 1 unit social studies)
